DIEP Flap Reconstruction – Page 3

The following images are from actual patients treated by Dr. Elisabeth Potter who have undergone DIEP flap reconstruction surgery.

This patient, age 39, was diagnosed with left breast cancer. She began with a left breast lumpectomy followed by chemotherapy. Because of residual cancer, she proceeded with a second lumpectomy and eventually a bilateral mastectomy with immediate DIEP flap reconstruction when she continued to show positive margins. Originally a DD cup, she requested to be a C after surgery. She had an initial revision surgery followed by 3-D nipple tattoos (After 1). She desired more upper breast volume, so she underwent a second revision surgery that included the placement of small implants under the breast flaps (After 2).

This 47 year old patient has a  history of left breast cancer and BRCA2 gene mutation. In 2013, she underwent bilateral nipple sparing mastectomies and implant reconstruction with another surgeon. She opted to undergo bilateral implant removal and DIEP flap breast reconstruction in 2018. She had 2 small revision surgeries.

This 46 year old patient has a history of left breast cancer and prior lumpectomy. She later underwent a left nipple sparing completion mastectomy and immediate DIEP flap reconstruction. She had a right breast reduction mastopexy for symmetry.

This 47 year old patient was diagnosed with left breast invasive ductal carcinoma. She underwent bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and tissue expander placement. She completed adjuvant radiation therapy. Four months later she underwent bilateral tissue expander removal and DIEP flap reconstruction.

This 51 year old patient has a history of bilateral breast cancer. She underwent bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and tissue expander placement. She then completed adjuvant radiation therapy. Four months after completion of radiation she underwent bilateral tissue expander removal and DIEP flap breast reconstruction.

This 39 year old patient was diagnosed with right breast cancer. She underwent bilateral skin mastectomies with tissue expander placement. She did not require post-surgical treatment based on her pathology. Shey later underwent bilateral tissue expander removal and DIEP flap reconstruction.

This  50 year old patient has a history of left breast cancer and BRCA2 gene mutation. She first underwent bilateral skin sparing mastectomies with tissue expander placement. Following subsequent left breast radiation, she underwent tissue expander removal and bilateral DIEP flap reconstruction.

This 47 year old patient was diagnosed with left breast DCIS in 2013, She underwent left lumpectomy and radiation therapy. She later opted for bilateral skin sparing mastectomies and had implant reconstruction with textured shell implants with another surgeon.  She was found to have right implant rupture and underwent bilateral implant removal with capsulectomies and DIEP flap breast reconstruction in 2019.

This 39 year old patient has a history of right breast cancer. She underwent a right lumpectomy with oncoplastic reconstruction and left breast reduction for symmetry with her breast surgeon. She had positive margins, so subsequently underwent right skin sparing mastectomy and immediate stacked DIEP flap breast reconstruction.

This 46 year old patient has a history of left breast cancer. She underwent a lumpectomy followed by completion mastectomy and tissue expander placement. She then had her left tissue expander exchanged for an implant and a right mastopexy, all with a different surgeon, in 2005. She presented to us to discuss revision surgery, as over time, her left implant had shifted toward her axilla. She underwent left implant removal and DIEP flap reconstruction.
